About Noravank Protected Landscape

Noravank Protected Landscape

Noravank Protected Landscape is located in the Vayots Dzor Province of southern Armenia, occupying a rugged canyon carved by the Amaghu River. The area showcases striking red limestone cliffs that tower above narrow gorges, creating one of Armenia's most visually captivating natural settings. The protected landscape encompasses steep rock formations, diverse flora including juniper and wildflowers, and fauna such as Eurasian lynx, bezoar goats, and a variety of birds. Central to the area’s cultural heritage is the Noravank Monastery complex, dating back to the 12th–14th centuries, featuring intricate Armenian architecture and medieval khachkars (cross-stones). The monastery sits dramatically against a backdrop of rough stone cliffs, enhancing its appeal to visitors. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore several hiking trails with breathtaking panoramic views, visit the monastery, and experience bird watching and photography. Noravank also serves as a setting for rock climbing and nature study, attracting those interested in geology and ecology. The landscape’s relatively dry continental climate means hot summers and cold winters, making spring and autumn the preferred seasons for visits. The area is easily accessible by road from the nearby towns of Yeghegnadzor and Areni. This blend of geological wonder, historical monuments, and outdoor recreation opportunities makes Noravank Protected Landscape a unique destination for both cultural travelers and nature lovers.
